Company’s Founder Returns to Helm, Having Led Scorpion as CEO for 20 Years
Scorpion, a leading provider of technology and services helping local businesses thrive, has appointed Rustin Kretz as CEO. Kretz, who founded and led the company as CEO for 20 years, served as Scorpion’s Chief Product Officer over the past year. He succeeds former CEO Daniel Street and will retain his position as Chairman of the Board. The company’s headquarters will remain in Salt Lake City, UT.
“We are grateful for the leadership Daniel provided during a time of remarkable growth, product success and customer satisfaction at Scorpion,” said Blair Greenberg, Scorpion Board Member and Partner at Bregal Sagemount. “We welcome Rustin back to a position in which he has been extremely successful, as his vision, leadership and innovations have been the driving force that made Scorpion the company it is today.”
The move comes after significant growth and momentum for Scorpion, driven by a close, collaborative leadership effort between Kretz and Street. Since Scorpion’s $100 million Series A led by Bregal Sagemount in April, the company moved its headquarters to the Salt Lake City area where it was named a Certified Great Place to Work, one of the 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials, the Best Company to Work for by Utah Business Magazine and Entrepreneur’s Top Franchise Suppliers. 2021 also saw several strategic acquisitions, including leading franchise marketing agency Wheat Creative, legal digital marketing solutions provider MediaSmack and AI-powered SEO software company CanIRank. During this time, Scorpion expanded its workforce by 30 percent while maintaining a client retention rate of ~94.5 percent.
“I want to thank Dan for his hard work and accomplishments over the last year. We've acquired some great businesses, added some incredibly talented leaders to our team, and are positioned very well to help even more businesses succeed in the future,” said Scorpion’s newly-named CEO and founder Rustin Kretz. “We've successfully navigated the challenges of the pandemic, and I'm very proud of Scorpion and all the people here whose expertise, creativity and care continue to contribute to the success of our over 14,000 small businesses. While 2022 will be marked by powerful advancements to our cutting-edge technology, at the heart and soul of Scorpion is the dedication and celebration of the success of the businesses that we are so proud to help.”
In 2021, as part of its ongoing Scorpion Cares program, the company launched a new scholarship initiative that awarded four college students $10,000 each to support their pursuit of careers in business and technology. Scorpion also awarded individual gifts of support for employees and clients in the Midwestern and East Coastal states that were negatively impacted by tornadoes and hurricanes in 2021. The company continuously sponsors and participates in small business organizations in Santa Clarita and Salt Lake City such as the EDC and the Chamber of Commerce, to provide advocacy and education for local businesses in those areas.
